AFRO-CHILEAN
Afro-Chileans are Chileans of African descent. The first Africans were brought in 1563 and slavery was abolished in 1823. They are concentrated in Arica y Parinacota of northern Chile. They make up less than 1% of the population with 8,415 Afro-Chileans. “They are not recognized by the Chilean government as an ethnic group. The strong activist efforts organizations like Afro-Chilean Alliance(Lumbanga, Oro Negro and Arica Negro) asserted the inclusion of Afro-Chileans as an ethnic group in the recent census.”(Afropedea) African influences can be seen in the culinary delight of sopaipillas and the rhythmic music and dance of tumbe.
